I'M HOMESICK.

Yes, this has been on my mind for sometime. I'm homesick. I'm so fucking homesick that I sat down and wrote a letter.... in RUSSIAN. I know, you're thinking "Holy fuck! What? This person can write in RUSSIAN? I'm shocked and appalled that this person writes in English. Russian is so much better." Well yeah, I guess you got your little point, but I have to disagree with y'all on this one. Yes, Russian language is beautiful, granted you use it right. It's overly difficult, like Japanese and possibly no one speaks it right. yes, even the people living in Moscow may not have the proper pronunciations. Anyway, the language is great.. the country not so much. I mean, really, you can't expect OUR people to think of the better good. Why should they? This wonderful, kind hearted capitalism promises to feed us and make us happy. So what if some old person starves or the production lines stopped. As long as I get my PLAZMA TV I'm in heaven.

No, that's not how things are supposed to work. If you destroy, you have to build. USSR is no more, but what's left instead of it? A corrupted hell-hole? What is my generation growing up to be when you BUY your grades? I don't get it. We are smart people and once ( a long time ago) we were hard working too. What happened to all of that wonderful labor? Why are we falling for the quick fixes, quick ways to get rich, and quick lives? Where is there such wide spread epidemic of crimes and.. gosh... I don't know how to even say this.. NAZISM?

Listen, if you want to prove that your country is the best, do it. Don't just sit around on your fat ass and yell about it. You have to get up and do it... like they do it on Discovery channel. Anyway, I'm proud of my heritage. I love my people.. but Christ, you're fucking up the best thing that could have happened. Share! You hear? Share fortune with the unfortunate and only then are you truly going to be a great nation.

Ximitationxgoth We're doing our best. It's the first generation, that has minimal soviet influence. Until there is one person, who remembers USSR, nothing can be changed. Btw, Russia is all about a thousand different nationalities, so to become one nation, first thing we must do is STOP racial conflicts.
You are damn wrong talking about the poor people. You know what happens if you lend or give money to a poor man? He's going to spend it all on vodka. It's in his blood. Even if you give him millions of dollars, it will not change him or his way of life. That's why our mission is to stop the future generation from making the same mistakes. It's not USSR's fault. The country that was broken up had enough recourses to last us decades. But instead of building on top of that wonderful surplus, that generation just obliterated everything. More than 80 percent of Russia's production factories and what not have been put out of work. I don't blame my generation, the children of the 90's, but we're growing up with wrong things in our heads. There's this ever-lasting materialism. And don't deny it, every one is trying to live like what they see on TV, mainly the Hollywood caricatures of American life.

Anyway, I know my views are extreme. Your English is fine and I respect that you're ballsy enough to contradict that. It's a beginning.

Let's have an overall look on the sutiation. USSR crashes, factories are closed, all the funds are divided between several people. The new goverment starts with a ZERO capital. An absolute nothing. There is no food, shops are empty. The only thing left is our fabulous military force and natural resources.
The new Russia is starting to get built on the ruins of USSR. USSR was fully independent and closed for the rest of the world, that's why european and american culture couldn't reach russian people. All they knew was Beatles and Boney M, and even that was illegal. With the crush of USSR, Russia opens herself for the world, and becomes influenced by different cultures and lifestyles. The goverment is trying to build the new Russia based on the Soviet lifestyle. On the other hand, USA, EU are getting their noses into all of this business, trying to show that everything we do is wrong. So the soviet culture became mixed with european, and that's exactly what Russia is now. Trying to make democracy with our heads full of soviet shit.
A man is influenced by the people around him. That's a fact. So tv's are making us believe in what they show. But still, cinematography is art. A good movie makes you seek what's inside yourself...

True, there is a conflict of the cultures and frankly, I think the west is winning over. I can't say that I'm glad about it because Russian culture was special. I mean, yes there was alcoholism and prostitution even during USSR, but not to the level that it is now. It's sad to see how our people are struggling and how the government refuses to amend itself.

I'm a child of immigration and I lived through the worst of 90's. That's how I'm connected.

And though i didn't live through the worst of 90's, it's pretty hard to get used to what's happening. I was born in russia, but lived most of my life in europe. Now back in russia, trying to make this place my home.

Well, I used to. At the present, I'm afraid I lack the smoothness I once possessed. Besides that, I got a what my old friends say an 'American' accent. But I can still read and write quite well.

So, why did your folks decide to come back? It's kind of hard to return to that way of life after the 'great' west.

Cause here in St.Petersburg my father can work in the Mariinskiy theatre, which is one of the best in the world, while in europe it was rly hard for him to get a job. Plus, we lived in Greece, which is very specific. It's not like most of EU. They dislike strangers, especially from soviet countries, and i could say it wasn't easy to live there. Feels much more comfortable back in Russia.

Hm, I wish my parents could do the same, but we're already strangers if we return. America really puts a new spin on life. It's very hard to return to the same mode of thinking. But still, I envy you. You didn't have to suffer much through the whole immigration process.
